You may be familiar with Omega-3s and the importance of them in your daily health. They are a fatty acid that our body doesn’t produce on its own which requires us to get it from food or supplements. Fish & Krill
Fish has some of the highest levels of DHA and EPA omega-3 fatty acids. However, it is also one of the most polluted foods in this day. Although it doesn’t have as much as fish oil, the difference is that its omega-3 fats are much more absorbable due to vitamins A, E, D and the antioxidant astaxanthin it provides. With that added antioxidant effect, it will not turn rancid inside your body.
Krill also comes in a high abundance. It is the largest biomass on Earth meaning there is a large stock of renewable krill for our use as well as the diet consumption for whales, seals, and other marine creatures. Fish, on the other hand, have been used for much more human consumption that there are high risks of over harvesting. When comparing the two, krill oil has the lead as a smarter, superior choice for omega-3s.
Benefits of Krill
Studies have found krill oil to be helpful in reducing blood sugar levels, keeping your heart healthy, reducing pain as an anti-inflammatory, improve brain health, and boost metabolism.
A study conducted in 2004 reviewing alternative medicine found krill oil reduced blood glucose levels in patients. Additionally, they found that consuming 1,000 mg of it per day increased insulin effectiveness by increasing sensitivity to glucose.
Omega-3 fats in krill oil reduce the risk of heart disease, provided you follow other heart-healthy practices. It also helps with high cholesterol levels and reduces triglyceride levels. Cholesterol is beneficial for vitamins and healthy hormone levels in our body so when it is high, doctors resort to prescribing statin drugs (atorvastatin, simvastatin, etc.) to help lower it. However, a natural supplement such as krill oil provides a great alternative.
A group of researches did a study of krill oil on mice with arthritis. They found that there was less swelling and fewer inflammatory cells in their joints. As a natural anti-inflammatory it helps reduce inflammation in the body as well as pain associated with both rheumatoid arthritis and osteoporosis. Additionally, the omega-3 fats also have shown promise in treating inflammatory skin disorders such as eczema and psoriasis, as well as acne breakouts.
Omega-3 fats have crucial health benefits for the brain by including DHA and EPA into your body. DHA is responsible fore the development of the brain’s fetus. EPA influences behavior and mood and can reduce your risk of ADHD, dyspraxia, and dementia.
Krill oil can boost metabolism through its high metabolic function found in omega-3. It reduces fat buildup in the liver, manages the high concentration of sugar in the blood, and lowers cholesterol levels as mentioned previously.
Krill oil has so many health benefits and is more powerful/effective as an omega-3 rich oil than fish oil. Surprisingly, it is under-rated as a supplement but should be implemented into your diet. It is safe to consume 300 to 1,000 mg of krill oil per day, but you should not consume more than that. Through this supplement you can see increased heart health, joint support, brain health, metabolism and manageable glucose levels. It is also believed to work best when taken in the morning.
Keep in mind fish or krill oil is not recommended for those with shellfish or seafood allergies. If you have a blood coagulation disorder or taking blood thinners you should refrain from these supplements. Always consult your doctor before making a supplement switch and remember that it should not replace a healthy diet of fruits and vegetables.
